Welcome to WB Triple Shot, where we talk about three different spirits at three different price points. Today we’re going to head to the tropics and talk all about rum!

Rum had its start in the Caribbean with its main ingredient being sugarcane, which is fermented and distilled. Once distilled, the liquid can then be aged in barrels, creating all the various rum types available. Today we’re going to take a look at three different types of rum: White, Spiced and Dark.

Let’s dive into this month’s selections!

Captain Morgan White Rum

Priced at around $17, Captain Morgan White Rumis a crips and light rum, with a slightly sweet aftertaste, making it the perfect rum to use for a refreshing mojito.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum

With a price tag of approximately $24, Kraken is a black spiced rum, which uses molasses fermented and distilled in white rum. The molasses fermentation leads to a rum that is full of caramel and toffee notes with a nice, spicy finish.

Zaya Gran Reserva

For those seeking a rum with more depth and complexity, Zaya Gran Reserva, priced around $38, is a true gem. With a unique set of flavors and aromas, this rum blend has a fruity scent. Zaya gives off the usual spicy sweetness that you'd expect, but finishes with a nice smokiness.

CAPTAIN MORGAN MOJITO

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 ¾ Captain Morgan White Rum
  • 1 oz Sugar Syrup
  • 2 Wedges of Lime
  • Mint
  • Soda Water
 

Directions (makes 1 serving):

  1. Place 7 mint leaves, lime, and sugar syrup into the bottom of a tall glass.
  2. Add the sugar syrup on top of the mint and lime.
  3. Muddle gently to release the lime juices.
  4. Fill your glass 3/4 full with crushed ice (important to use crushed ice to ensure maximum flavour).
  5. Pour in Captain Morgan White Rum and soda water.
  6. Stir well, top with more crushed ice, garnish with a mint spring, and enjoy!

Kraken painkiller

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 oz Kraken rum
  • 4 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz cream of coconut

Directions (makes 1 serving):

  1. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the pineapple juice, orange juice, coconut cream and rum.
  2. Place the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for one minute. 
  3. Strain the mixture into glass with ice and enjoy!

ZAYA MAI TAI

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 oz Zaya Rum
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • ¾ oz Triple Sec
  • ¾ oz Orgeat
  • 2-3 Dashes Angostura Bitters

 

Directions (makes 1 serving):

  1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well.
  2. Strain into a Tiki glass and fill with crushed ice.
  3. Garnish with lemon, mint, and ground nutmeg, and enjoy!
