The classic scotch cocktail brings to light images of refinement, class, and sophistication. So much so that National Scotch Day was created to commemorate the fabulousness of scotch. Who created this special day to honor such a popular liquor? There is no formal verification of the creator, but I am certain all of the scotch retailers and consumers of the world aren’t complaining one bit. Scotch whisky falls into a variety of classifications, such as blended whisky, single grain whisky, blended malt whisky, and single malt whisky, to name a few.

Of course, everyone has their preferred way to enjoy their scotch. While there are many variations of the scotch cocktail, each glass is unique in itself. However you take your scotch, pour yourself a drink, and let’s celebrate National Scotch Day with a few classic scotch cocktails.

Penicillin

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 oz. blended Scotch whisky
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz. honey syrup
  • 3 slices fresh ginger
  • 1/4 oz. Islay single malt Scotch

INSTRUCTIONS:
Using a wooden muddler or mixing spoon, muddle the fresh ginger in the bottom of a cocktail shaker until it is well mashed. Add the blended scotch, lemon juice, and honey syrup, and fill shaker with ice. Shake until well chilled (about 20 seconds). Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass (you may wish to double-strain through a fine tea strainer to remove the small flecks of ginger), and pour the scotch over the back of a bar spoon so that it floats atop the drink.
